A STUDY ON MYCOBACTERIAL INFECTIONS IN DOMESTIC ANIMALS IN KOREA

Abstract
A study was conducted in order to elucidate mycobacterial infections and epizootiology in domestic: animals, which were important not only -in meat hygiene but also in public health in Korea.
Korean native cattle, swine and sewage samples from an abattoir were examined for isolation and identification of mycobacteria species.
The results were summarized as follows:
1) The incidence rate of bovine tuberculin reactor in dairy cattle in 1970 was. 362. 1 per 100, 000, while the rate in. 1979 was 53.5 per 100, 000(P-(0.01).
2) Of the total_ incidence from.1970 through 1979, 69.7% were reported from Gyeong-gi province, and11. 7% were from Seoul, and Gyeong-gi and Seoul were found to be a major enzootic area of M.bovis. The incidence rates by season were 38.7% in Winter, .22.2% in Spring, 20.3% in Summer and 18.8% in. Autumn respectively.
3) Nontuberculosis mycobacteria species were isolated from 25 out of 150 heads of Korean nativecattle(16.7%) and 19 out of 150 heads of swine(12.7%).
4) Twenty-five isolates from cattle were grouped according to Runyon¢¥s grouping. One isolate (4.0%) was photochromogen, three (12.0%)_-"sc"otochromogens, sixteen (64.0%) nonphotochromogens and five (20.0%) rapid growers.
Twenty-three isolates from swine were grouped as follows: Six isolates (26.0%) were scotochromogens,) eight (34.8%) nonphotochromogens and nine (39.1,06) rapid growers.
5) Species identifications of Nontuberculosis mycobacteria isolates was performed and those from complex, M. smegmatis, M. diernhoferi, and M. fortuitum.
Meanwhile, the nontuberculosis mycobacteria from swine were M. scrofulaceum, M..flavescens, M.:terrae complex, M avium intracellulae, M triviale, M. smegmatis, lit fortuitum, M. phlei and M. uaccae.
6) Twenty-six strains of nontuberculosis mycobacteria were isolated from 34 sewage samples. They -were M. scrofulaceum, M. gordonae, and M. vaccae.
7) The Nontuberculosis mycobacterial species isolated from animals and sewage were compared, M _scrofulaceum, and M fortuitum were isolated both from animals and sewage, but M. avium intracellulae was isolated from animals only.
